- SSD upgrade: the biggest speed boost for an older computer. Your drive is cloned, so everything stays just as it was, only much faster.

The hidden danger: dust
Every computer pulls air through it to stay cool, and with it comes dust, pet hair and fluff. Over time it builds up on the fans and heatsinks and acts like a blanket. Most people never look inside, so they have no idea until something goes wrong.
What a build-up of dust can do:
- Overheating: the processor and graphics card cannot get rid of heat, so they run far hotter than they should
- Slowdowns: a hot processor slows itself down to protect itself, so the computer feels sluggish
- Random shutdowns and crashes when parts get too hot
- Loud fans that roar to keep up
- Shorter life: heat wears out components, and a failed fan or power supply can take other parts with it
- In the worst cases, a fire risk, especially where dust packs into a power supply
Warning signs: fans louder than they used to be, the case feeling hot, the computer slowing down or switching off on its own, or visible dust in the vents.
